Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is the costume bank?
The costume bank is a warehouse where theatre companies store their costume collections. We maintain their pieces and offer them for other theatre and film companies to rent for their own productions.
  2. Who uses the costume bank?
Theatre companies or groups doing theatrical productions (i.e. schools) in the province of B.C., film production companies, and individuals looking for new looks for parties/conventions, etc.
  3. How do I access the bank for rentals?
You may come to the warehouse and pick out your rentals or you may browse the website and fill in the rental request form that may then be forwarded to us. We will pull the available pieces and ship them to you.
  4. Are you currently accepting new deposits?
Due to space limitation, we are not currently accepting new deposits.
  5. How long are the rental periods?
The rentals are geared to the length of your production. Typically, you will receive your rentals 2-3 weeks before opening, and they will be expected back at the warehouse 2 weeks after closing. This makes 6-8 week rental the norm.
  6. What type of things will I find in the bank?
You will likely find a wide variety of pieces that would serve for the general costuming of your chorus members for many characters and historical periods. These will be augmented by feature and character pieces that have been created by the depositing companies. You will also find a variety of small carry props.
  7. Who owns the pieces for rent? The depositing companies own the pieces. They store their collections at the bank where they are maintained and rented to other theatre groups.
  8. What does it cost to rent?
Each piece or costume has its own rental value – all of it less than it would cost to buy from a thrift store or to even start to build it.
  9. How do I pay?
Payment is in advance by company cheque, cash or charge card imprint for the rental cost as invoiced, and we also require a separate deposit (a Visa imprint) for the replacement values of the pieces you have rented. It is not intended that this second deposit be cashed; it will be held until the costumes are returned. If there is loss, damage, or cleaning issues, then the imprint will be filled in and returned to you with the invoice for correction of the problems.
  10. How do I use the website?
The website is divided into a number of linked categories. Go to the category you hope will fit and click. You will then be able to view all pieces that fit into that area with the appropriate measurements, colors, photo links, etc. Each piece will appear on several category lists so what you miss in one viewing/search may appear on another to help you. Each contributing company will be able to access a listing of their own collection on this website.
  11. How do I know what's available?
You may call us or send a rental inquiry on the rental request form included on this site. You will be quickly informed by email or phone call if the pieces you would like are available on the timeline you require.
